Gardening is one hobby that my kids and I love to do during the summer time. I can't be out there in the garden without them wanting to help so I always let them. I planted two kinds of beans in the garden and one kind was not good in cooking with the skin on so I just waited for it to mature till the seeds are ready then we picked them all.
I am glad that I have two happy pickers that were willing to help me with this.
Opening the bean pods is an enjoyable thing for them to do.
We did this while we were watching our favorite cooing show on TV.
This little things that they can do teaches them to be responsible and they also learn about plants that we eat. It's sad to know that some kids don't even know what beans look like. I packed my son some stamed green beans one day and one of his classmates asked what he was eating. He told him that it was green beans. He said it was weird because the kid loves green beans, the only difference is, he only knew the cut green beans from the can where it's no longer green but a bit darker. My kids don't like canned green beans because they are mushy. They love beans when it's a bit crisp.
It is important for kids to learn where their food comes from or how it grows.
Every time they help me do stuff around the house, we always give them incentives. IT motivates them to help every time.
These two is very competitive so when one offer to help, the other one will help as well.
I cooked some of it in a coconut milk and chicken.
The rest of the beans, I blanched them and put them in the freezer.
I have been using the frozen one in dishes like bean soup and other dishes. Having a garden is such a great thing. You get to enjoy fresh veggies that you love. It's rewarding to harvest what you sow.

I love this. Down here in the south, we all have gardens. It's a great way to save money, but it's also a great family bonding experience.
I would love to have a garden like that! Everything I touch dies LOL! My son even tried growing beans a couple months ago. We grew it outside and they died because of the frost that I totally forgot about.
I would love to have a garden this year. I enjoy eating from one. Growing up we always had one, but I don't live in very favorable areas for growing.
Great way to teach children about gardening. And that is a lot of beans. I remember doing similar gardening chores as a kid too.

As an apartment dweller I hate that I can't have a Garden, I would like to grow my own food and herbs! My great-grandmother was the one with the green thumb in the family. I have seen an upswing in 'urban gardening' on the roof of some buildings, but sadly this isn't one of them. Definitely looks like a great family bonding experience.

I have to agree that a garden can be completely rewarding in many ways. The kids are indeed amazing helpers when it comes to gardening. I know my boys used to love doing things with us in our garden. Thanks for sharing and the beans cooked in coconut milk and chicken sounds amazing.
Growing veggies are so much fun and I'm happy to see your kids are involved as well. I live in town and took over a sidewalk where an empty building is so I could use the flower bed along the side of it to grow veggies.
I grew up helping my Grandma with her garden. My sister, brothers, and I would go every day and help with the planting, tending, picking, and shelling or whatever needed to be done. It was a valuable learning experience!
This is a great way to teach kids about gardening. The soup looks creamy and delicious. How I wish I had a garden.
we live in an apartment right now since moving so a garden is not possible, but I might put out a couple pots for tomatoes:)
Looks like the kids had a lot of fun! When we had a garden my daughters would love picking everything out of it and doing things like this. We use to do this with peas all the time. The kids loved it!

We were not able to do a garden last year and I am not sure if I will do one this season or not. I am going through a divorce and I'd like to move out of state this year. I love gardening and can't wait to get back to it.

I can't wait till we move into a bigger house with a bigger back yard. I want to teach my kids about growing food and have them grow their own gardens. It's such a beautiful thing to see the kids work together and pick their own food. Oh what a dream!

Wish I had veggies growing in my yard. I love fresh fruit and vegetable and they extremely expensive in my country at the moment since we faced drought recently.
