Bottle Gourd

Bottle Gourds or locally  known as Upo  is a very common  vegetable in the Philippines.  This kind of vegetable comes in  different shapes and sizes. Here are different  terms for gourds.

  • Opo, Calabash (U.S.)
  •  Dudhi, Lauki, Sorakaya (India)
  • Yugao, Kampyo (Japan)
  • Po gua (Canton)
  •  Kwa kawa, Hu gua (China)
  • Upo (Filipino)
  • Cucuzzi, Cucuzza (Italy)
  • Bau (Vietnam)

My kids love this veggie.  I usually  use this for pork soup or saute it with  sardines.

oh how i miss eating upo, though i have seen one here in one of the asian market but i never bother buying it because i don't know how to cook them. hehehe

Sis Rose, those are long upo :-) I love to mix it with meat...yum and nutrish too :-) I have not see any upo here :-( not even in Asian store :-(

Where in the world did you get those, mommy Rose? They are so long. I want to plant some in our garden next gardening season. I too love this in soup or sauteeing in sardines. hehehe.. Pinoy na pinoy talaga. In soup it is so good because it has that sweet taste to it. :) Love veggies!

Oh, pwede ba yan sa miswa? I actually freeze some of it as I couldn't cook them all.
